A few months ago, through various conversations, I became keenly interested in something. Specifically in our culture’s a) fascination with celebrities, and more importantly b) how often we won’t admit to having that interest.
It is a billion dollar industry, yet almost no one I spoke with would admit to consuming, watching, reading, anything “celebrity related”. No admission, yet they knew who was dating whom, or the latest controversy.
So, for the past few months I have been doing my own “research”. I wanted to understand and see what the big deal is with all this stuff. I visited tmz.com, sat through a few of the entertainment shows and while at a grocery store, even glanced over at the tabloids. After enduring this, I have a confession – I don’t get it?
First off, I don’t get how any of that celebrity stuff is entertaining, but then again, my wife doesn’t understand how dudes hitting a frozen piece of rubber into a net is “entertainment”.
The bigger thing I don’t get is, why most people won’t admit to being into the stuff when clearly they are?
- Is it that they know its wrong?
- Is it a part of their life that they enjoy, but can’t admit to enjoying?
- Does it make them feel silly for watching it?
What is it?
Because on the same level, I am fascinated with all things apple, sports (especially the NHL ie. Sens), design, food network shows etc… I am not ashamed or embarrassed that I enjoy that stuff. I will openly admit and talk about it. So why so secretive when it comes to loving the celebrities?
Anyone help me out here?

I think the reason there’s so much secrecy behind it all is pretty much the same reasons people don’t broadcast that they watch soap operas, or cartoons – it’s as it someone might say “get a life.” I’ll share a little tidbit that I don’t go around broadcasting – even though it’s in the past. I used to be a soap opera addict. I used to tape (remember the vcr?) three shows and watch them after the kids went to bed. If the tape ran out – OY! I was embarassed then to tell my friends I watched them let alone addictively and I’m still embarassed to admit I ever did watch them. I do have a life now, one that doesn’t revolve around Entertainment Tonight and As the Stomach Turns. Thanks for hearing my confession.
Jason,
If you’re just recently getting into it, you’re probably not familiar with most of the young, teeny-bopper celebrities being covered. So, since they’re not “real” to you, naturally you’ll have no interest in them. But, if a story about Chris Martin comes on, since you’re a Coldplay fan, your ears might perk up a little simply from curiousity.
Sometimes I stop on TMZ when flipping through. But, sure enough, if my wife comes by, I quickly change the channel.
It’s embarrassing, because I know it’s a waste of time.
Maybe some people don’t like to admit to being interested in celebrity stuff because it is just that…”stuff”. The tabloids ususally focus the gossip and negativity in people’s lives. The entertainment shows are all about who’s going where, with who, and what are they wearing. Although some find this entertaining, they may not want to admit to having an interest in the superficial aspects of celebrity’s lives. Maybe they are concerned that other’s might think that their interests are a reflection of themselves. These are just a couple thoughts.
Regardless of what we like or dislike, what we find entertaining and what we don’t, it’s important to always be real and have the courage of our convictions behind the choices we make.
Have a great week!
with many blessings,
Shelley
p.s. Maya and I found a t.v show that we both love. “How It’s Made” on the Discovery Channel…great show for children.
Jay, I have to say that I read celebrity blogs every day, and I am not ashamed of it. First of all, it’s a great form of entertainment: I usually read or see things that are so dumb/unimaginable that I can’t help but laugh when it comes to celebrities. Secondly, reading the blogs gives me something to do while i’m at work and bored.
I think that as long as you’re reading your bible and are current in world events and news, there is no problem in checking out the latest gossip on a celebrity or about the iPhone or the Sens.
I hope my point of view helped
Just my two cents, I felt a year or so ago God calling me not to buy into or participate in gossip, especially paying money to feed that system.. so I found myself literally throwing away a National Enquirer I’d just bought in a moment of weakness because I LOOOOVE celebrity gossip!! (US Weekly is the best, really good pictures!) I think it’s because these are real people and probably 90% of it is lies, how can I be part of feeding that and tell myself that God is OK with it, and with me in it.. I don’t want to be holier than thou or legalistic with it, but I try to ‘curb my enthusiasm’ and not spend my (God’s) valuable time or money on it for that reason. Dang though, I DO enjoy it.
