How to Come Off a Long Fast

If you fast for 7 days or more you need to be careful how you come off your fast. Paul Bragg has a 3-day program on how to come off a long fast that I have used. It gets your digestive system up and running again and most importantly gets your metabolism going.  You should stick with fresh foods for a couple weeks, adding in small amounts of meat, dairy and breads. You will find after a long fast your tastes will change and you will crave fresh food. Your body will not enjoy processed foods. It will actually not taste good. Your head will say… oh Big Macs are so good and you will take a bite and your mouth and body will say… not so good. Go with it; don’t push your body to crave things that are not good for it. Stick with mostly fresh foods as a lifestyle and use this momentum as opportunity to change your eating habits forever.

This is the 3-day program on how to break a long fast by Paul Bragg, taken from his book called The Miracle of Fasting

Day One
Around supper on the first day off your fast peel 4-5 medium sized tomatoes, cut them and boil them in a bit of water. (This was worse to me than not eating, I only ate what I could stomach. Stewed tomatoes  are not tasty to say the least.)

Day Two
In the morning have a salad of grated cabbage, grated carrots, and squeeze a half an orange over it.

After that you can have a bowl of steamed greens and more boiled tomatoes.

You can also have a piece of Melba toast

Supper
A salad of grated cabbage, grated carrots, chopped celery and squeeze half an orange over it.

2 cooked vegetables, one green and one carrots or squash

2 pieces of Melba if you want

Day Three
Breakfast
Bowl of fruit such as banana, pineapple, orange, grapefruit, or apples

Lunch
A salad of grated cabbage, grated carrots, chopped celery and squeeze half an orange over it.

1 cooked vegetables, one green and one carrots or squash

1 piece of Melba if you want

Supper
Salad of lettuce, watercress, parsley, tomatoes

2 cooked vegetables

Once you finish this three-day program make sure to take your time introducing new foods. You will be amazed how hard it is to stop fasting. The longer you go, the harder it is to stop. You will come to love how you feel while you are fasting and the thought of stopping will be challenging. Your taste buds and your body will enjoy the different healthy foods you feed them. You will appreciate the food you choose to eat. Your mind about food will probably change from eating for pleasure to eating for nourishment, you will no longer think how much can I eat and not gain weight and start to really listen to your body.

You may experience a challenging time following your fast. It’s important to keep reading your Bible often, continue your habit of praying regularly and guard your thoughts from the battle that will be going on for your break through.

When I came off my fast just last 2 weeks ago I wrestled with all consuming thoughts that were not from God. They over took my mind and thought life and although I tried and tried to overcome I finally had to ask Jason to pray and break those negative thoughts off my mind. It was very strong, but after I received prayer I believed it was gone and from that moment on chose not to let my mind wander there.

This week has been a battle of another kind. I feel as though God stirred me up so much during my fast that now I feel discontented. I feel frustrated and overwhelmed. I want to do so much and feel like there is never enough time. It is affecting me to the point of anxiety and I have struggled through several days this past week claiming God’s truth, yet feeling on the losing end of the battle much of the time.

I know it’s all a part of what God is doing in my life and He is flushing out of me my ways of doing things, my plans, my desires and bringing me to a place of surrender to all of those things. I know I need to take action in my life about what God is stirring and the opportunities He is bringing my way. It’s exciting but risky and I believe until I step out in faith I will feel this wrestling in my Spirit.

This is an amazing series. God has been speaking to me a lot over the last few months about fasting.
I can only imagine what it feels like spiritually to come of a fast. I suppose it might be a little like comingback from a retreat or camp when we were kids, and real life kicks in again and there is a disconnected feeling.
    You are in my prayers.

    Laura,
    Thanks for praying…
It’s exactly how you decribed it…
Fasting is a powerful tool that not many people use…
I was shocked to see how much I had to say on the subject…

    Dearest Lori:
I have missed not getting to the blogs this week.
Thank you so much for sharing all of this fasting information and some of your personal experiences with fasting. I have been wanting to learn more about Spiritual fasting and its purpose.
I have also been quite hesitant to do any kind of dietary restrictions due to the years of bondage that I spent in eating disorders. God has set me free from that cage of hell that robed so much of my life and almost killed me and I am so thankful. I am realizing that if Holy Spirit were to convict me to fast than I believe a fast would be safe for me as long as I was to stay in obedience to His guidance. So I am going to be more open to the possibility that the Spiritual practice of fasting is something God will allow in my Life if need be. I will no longer exclude myself based on my past. I will look to Christ for His guidance and timing.
    Thanks again.
I claim protection from Spiritual attack for you Lori in the name Christ Jesus our Lord and Saviour Amen.

We’re coming to the end of a 42 day juice fast and there really isn’t alot of information on how to do that, so I appreciate what’s been posted. I have read that you should take half as long to come off a fast as you fasted, but the types of food to eat aren’t mentioned. We thought we’d go to a Daniel Fast. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I also appreciate your honesty on the battle in your soul. Taking communion has been an absoute must for us on this fast – once in the morning and again in the evening. This is something we intend to continue. Blessings, Vicki

I can’t thank you enough for your comments. Last night I felt that I was done with my fast, so I had a small cup of jello. This morning, as I woke up, I felt so unsettled with the idea of quitting after only 7 days. I then decided that this fast was not over. I’m going to press on!! I really want all that God has to offer.
Thanks for your insight and encouraging words………..Mike

I love how you recommend Paul Bragg’s method of breaking a fast. I once did a 40 day Juice fast, and broke it with peeled boiled tomatoes, but my experience was much different that yours…I had never had tomatoes that tasted so good!! I could hardly stop eating them! I can’t describe it, it was like I was eating food directly from heaven…so much better than chocolate or mashed potatoes and gravy that we often find comfort in.
